M2M (machine-to-machine) is the communication between machines that allows you to work faster, more efficiently and more safely. It is based on mobile data technology, which enables the comprehensive transfer of information worldwide as well as the remote control, remote diagnostics and remote maintenance of individual applications or complete systems and opens up a whole range of new application and business opportunities.
M2M communication connects machines together to make processes smoother. The machines, systems or sensors to be monitored are connected to an M2M hardware device via standard interfaces and transmit the data wirelessly via mobile communication to a central server for further processing.
What initially sounds very futuristic, is already omnipresent today and we encounter it in everyday life more often than we think.
Smart Home – M2M in your own home
M2M is everywhere: at home, on the way to work, shopping or sports. Especially in the Smart Home area, the possibilities are almost unlimited. The networked house can wirelessly transmit meter readings of electricity, gas and water to the supply company using a “smart meter” and replaces the manual reading. The control and monitoring of your own household is also an integral part of networked living and is used, for example, in the control of blinds and awnings, kitchen appliances, heating and air conditioning systems, lighting and intelligent alarm systems. This is no longer a vision of the future.
M2M technology can save lives
M2M technology also makes a valuable contribution to health monitoring. Heart pacemakers can transmit their data to the nearest hospital via a wireless station (e.g. in the bedroom), ensuring continuous monitoring of the patient’s state of health and rapid response in the event of an emergency. In the area of long-term ECGs and other medical measurements, data can also be recorded and transmitted in a digital diary.
Connected Car – the mobility of the future
In the field of mobility, there are many possible applications for establishing connectivity of vehicles and their surroundings. Information about safety and environmental conditions can be communicated. In addition, data can also be exchanged from vehicle to vehicle in order to avoid accidents and traffic congestion. Vehicles are able to share information with other cloud-related technologies such as Smart Homes, energy and transportation. The concept can be extensively expanded: from the exchange of information with pedestrians through to “vehicle to everything” communication, the entire mobility system could be connected.
